2010 Season Week 13 Clips

Screen Passes and DPI     This play was intended to be a screen pass.  However, as the play developed, the receiver and blockers moved further downfield.  When the receiver was making the play on the ball he was beyond the NZ (as were his linemen).  Can he be legally contacted before the ball arrives if he is beyond the NZ?  (7-3-8-c)   Some have said this should have been flagged as a  high hit on a defenseless receiver (9-1-4 new for 2010) The viewers can decide for themselves.

Chop Blocks "Caused" by Defender     Offensive lineman are in peril of being flagged for chop blocking when they go low on an opponent who is engaged with a teammate of the blocker.    (2-3-3)   However, in this video clip, one offensive lineman was making no attempt at all to confront the defender.  In fact, the first contact was clearly initiated by Team B.  So when the 2d offensive blocker went low, this was not a chop block.  (AR 9-1-2-XXVI)

DPI Forcing Receiver Out of Bounds     Multiple rules come into the picture on this play.  Was there DPI?  (7-3-8-c)  Was the receiver forced out of bounds?  (7-3-4) Was the ball caught? (2-2-7)

Facemask Foul ?   Some would call this a facemask foul.  Doesn't the facemask have to actually be grasped and twisted, turned, or pulled?  (9-1-2-q)  It would be possible to have a personal foul if the official deemed the contact on the facemask here was a strike.

Pass Interference ?  The viewer can decide which, if either of the 2, players here fouled.  Not all contact is necessarily a foul.  (7-3-8 and 7-3-9)

Wedge Blocking   The rule change has caused all officials to pay close attention on kickoffs for wedge blocking fouls.  Does the action herein fit the definition of wedge blocking ?(6-1-9)

Onside Kicks and Early Blocking   Team A cannot block Team B until they (Team A) are legally eligible to touch a free kick.  It does not matter if Team B crosses their restraining line, they are still protected (unless they initiate the contact).    (6-1-2-g)  In this video, who would see such an act?

Muffed Scrimmage Kick and Recovery  A scrimmage kick that is declared out of bounds between the goal lines belongs to the receiving team at the out of bounds spot, regardless of whether or not Team B touched it first. (6-3-7)   A ball that is touched by a player who is out of bounds is declared dead immediately and out of bounds at the spot it was when so declared.  (4-2-3-a)  It does not matter if Team B recovers the kick or not, it will be their ball as touching always precedes possession.

End Zone Catch - Forward Progress  Excellent example of a play that has been often discussed but rarely seen.  Airborne Team A receiver possesses the pass in the air while beyond the goal line. He is driven back into the field of play where he comes to ground.  This is correctly ruled a TD.  had he lost possession when he came to ground it would have been an incomplete pass.
